The Juniors on the rise!

It’s allready been a few weeks since, but its definitely worth writing a few words about it: exactly one month ago, the Freespeedies played and organized the second Junior Indoor Swiss Championships. Knowing that the team is narrowing the gap between the top 3 seeds with every practise, the juniors were eager to perform well and deliver a good show for the friends, parents and clubmembers who came to watch some games.

After a good first day with only one loss to the title defender (Disc Club Panthers, Bern), the Freespeedies earned themselves the easier quarterfinal against number 3 from the other pool. The plan on offense was to practise for the semifinals and try to work the disc safely into the endzone. The defensive plan was also considered a preparation for the semis. The Coach demanded tight man defence and quick switching from D to O, trying to score with one or two passes. The execution of the plan was almost perfect. The Freespeedies won their Quarters with the highest score of the tournament! Semis were against Crazy Whelps of Stans. Despite a much lower age average the Freespeedies fought hard and kept the game tight to the end. At the score 5:7 and less than one minute to play, the team took all the risk and went for the quick score to create the chance to play for the 7 all point. Blocked in the first attempt the team got the disc back quickly and immediately took another shot, unfortunately with no more success than the first one. After a hard fought game the Freespeedies lost their semis, but showed the „old“ guys what they should be afraid of in the next years and probably played one of their best games in the history of the Basel junior team.

The Game for 3rd place was against the former all-time finalist, the HiJackers from Kerns. In an intense game both teams put their best players on O and occasinally tried to get a break with their strong players on D. The game started with both teams scoring their points easily. Mid game a few individual mistakes and a dropped pull allowed the HiJackers to get some breaks. Not able to take the momentum into the last phase of the game, the HiJackers gave away a 6:4 lead in the last two minutes. The momentum on their side, Freespeedies played a last strong man D to get the block on the second pass. A few passes and a smooth dump swing combination finished the game in favour of the home team. For the first time, the Freespeedies beat one of the former top 3.

Freespeedies, Second Half Season Recap

Ultimate Frisbee Junioren Schweizermeisterschaft

Freespeedies reached their goal (4th place) on the first ever swiss junior championships last weekend. Considering that the age average of the top three teams is way above Freespeedies average, and looking at some of the results (6:8 against number 3, 7:10 against number 2 and 7:11 against the champion) the team played a great tournament. congratulations to all young players for a well played and hard fought tournament!

Berner Junioren Frisbee Meisterschaften

Freespeed One, Second Half Season Summary

Swiss Championships, Final Round, Ebikon (CH)

Sad story short: Freespeed one gave away an early lead in the Finals and again lost a game to Flying Angles wich never should have been lost! After all disappointment of our performance, congrats to the swiss champions, Flying Angels from Bern.

Dogs Outdoor, Stans (CH)

With a squad of 8 people (9 on sunday), Freespeed took this tournament to have some fun and find the way into the second half of the season. With the Olympics going on in London the team decided to dedicate the outfit to this Event. With beautifully self made shirts and some equipment from olympic disciplines a fun weekend was programmed. The beer race developed to a spontanuous special highlight, as „Michael Phelps“ lost the race just by some inches due to his deficient butterfly technique on grass… Party: good, Sunday: good. 3rd place and a lot of fun!

Bologna’s Back 2012 (20th anniversary edition), Bologna (IT)
The Freespeed Open Team finished the season with a last international tournament: Bologna’s Back 2012 (20th Anniversary)! The squad consisted of 12 players, of wich 3 were upcoming talents to be integrated for the future and 1 was a guest player. The young team made it all the way to semis, wich ended with the victory in double game point against Cota Rica from Rimini.
The finals against the hometeam CUSB La Fotta brought some hot action with many spectacular points on both sides. None of the teams could pull away early in the game and after one break each, the score was still one point difference at halftime. Bologna, playing for the first ever win of their own tournament, managed to punish one of our few mistakes to a two point lead. Time was over at 11:10 for Bologna, game to 12 (cap 1) with them starting on offence. For some passes they didn’t manage to move the disc any inch upfield and found themselves stalled out, what they contested. Not even 10 seconds later the swing after the dump pass was caught for the callahan! But there was an uncontested foul on the throw. The disc went back, to be thrown for another swing pass into another defenders hand! The second callahan score in 20 seconds tighten the score to 11 all, double game point. In a long point with Bologna having a lot of trouble to find options and having to choose risky options at high stall counts many times, they finally pulled down a last very lucky hammer in the endzone to win their own tournament! Over all it wasn’t luck though, that made Bologna win the game. We had some very lucky scores ourselves. It was hard fighting and well playing that brought the first ever victory in their home tournament. Congratulations CUSB La Fotta!

Many thanks to Bologna for an awesome final game and for a perfectly organized event! And thanks to the crowd for an amanzing athmosphere during the finals!
Thanks for reading, have a smooth break after a long season and a nice start into the indoor season!
