ECBU 2013

last weekend, some Freespeed players represented Switzerland at the 2013 european championship of beach ultimate:

Open: Ary Vaistij, Dave Moser, Harry Ohla Miki Martinec

Women: Chrigi Hürlimann

Open Masters: Lu Szabo, Oli Ducarre

the biggest news of the weekend is the double happiness of the open team! after winning the ECBU in 2008 and almost bringing home the SOTG award (Freespeed represented Switzerland in 2008), the swiss boys managed to win the tournament and being rated the most spirited team! congrats to this team who won everything there was to win!

the women team had a great run in the first three days, beating strong teams like Germany and Finland. On saturday they beat GB in a contested semifinal on double game point! in the finals the russian girls were too strong in the second half of the game. silver medal for the swiss women’s team. and a noteworthy 3rd place in the SOTG ranking list!

open masters ended on 11th place.

swiss open & women championships 2013

SATURDAY

the FREESPEED LADIES played strong on saturday and got two victories on the board! this made the team jump up one rank and qualify for the semi finals on sunday morning. semis will be against ZUF, the so far unbeaten and unchallenged team of this season and current swiss champion.

FREE2SPEED finally won their first game of this year’schampionship on saturday! one more game for 5th place in the lower swiss league will be their sunday program.

FREESPEED managed to bring home a hard fought early morning game against Solebang (17:13). the second game against the Flying Angels was one of the most intense games of this season. with some breaks and rebreaks on both side the game was decided in double gamepoint. Freespeed worked the last offense patiently down the field to take the game 17:16! the last game against Panthers was another tough challenge – as expected! some breaks at the end of the game made the score look like an easy win, but it certainly wasn’t: 17:11. with three victories on saturday, the Freespeed open team qualified for the finals! (8th consecutive final in the swiss championships).

SUNDAY

the FREESPEED LADIES fought hard in the semi finals, but couldn’t do much against the dominating team ZUF. after this loss the team didn’t have the best game for 3rd place. a few great plays and some attempts to get the energy back on the field were not enough to counter FABulous‘ solid game. 4th place for FREESPEED LADIES.

FREE2SPEED brought home the good news of the day. in a rematch of their saturday evening game they beat Panthers 2 again and finished on 5th place of the lower swiss league.

FREESPEED played a good final against Flying Angels. but not good enough. only one break on each side throughout the game shows the impressive work and high level from both O-lines. well, FAB started the game on O, so they started the double game point on O too. and scored the last point to 16:15 with some luck on a stall-9 huck.
pragmatically spoken, Freespeed lost the game with their D-line which didn’t convert their D-blocks, by throwing away some discs with not much pressure… congrats to FAB.
